What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are long lasting, thinly composed tooth covers that are custom made to fit your smile. When you meet with Dr. Hartman at Portland Dental Center, your dental cosmetic desires will be discussed in depth and your options will be carefully explained to you. Dental veneers generally come in two options, porcelain and composite.
Porcelain
With porcelain veneers, a mold will be taken of your teeth so your custom teeth caps can be created in the lab. On average, this can take up to two weeks, depending on how busy the lab is. Once the veneers are ready, they will be placed on the surface of your teeth through a bonding procedure. If one of your porcelain veneers breaks for any reason, it cannot be repaired and you will need to replace it.
Composite
Composite veneers can be created chair side which means you can leave the office with customize teeth caps in one office visit. Generally, the structure of each tooth will need to be altered significantly for placement of composite veneers. This type of veneer is cheaper than porcelain veneers, however usually only lasts half the duration. If a composite veneer breaks, it can be repaired by simply visiting our office.
Veneers are not the same as dental crowns as they are less durable and only cover the front side of the tooth. Crowns cover the entire tooth and require that the neighboring teeth are altered for a proper fit.
